Burgh St Margaret tower mill and it's buildings stood beside the Post Office in Mill Lane in what is now known ad Fleggburgh. The 5 storey mill had a Norfolk boat shaped cap with a gallery and a 6 bladed fan. Power came via 4 double shuttered sails, one pair having 8 bays of 3 shutters and the other pair having 8 bays of 3 shutters on the outer side and 4 pairs on the inner side. The sails were struck using a chain pole. |

Mrs. I. M. Clegg of Brentwood, Essex, wrote to Harry Apling on 8th February 1973 to say that her grandfather Robert Butler was born in 1837, to George & Maria Butler. George Butler was then miller at Repps_postmill but by 1845, Maria was alone and the miller at Burgh St. Margaret postmill. |

The young man in the picture is David Morris and he looks late teens to me, he is no longer alive, but I would think it was taken in the 1940’s. My husbands family had lived in the village for years and we have know the area for 70 odd years. Joan Barnard - 10th August 2023 |

I remember Mrs Clegg (see above) sending information about the Butler family to me years ago and on looking back at the family tree the Maria Butler miller at Burgh St Margaret on her own following the death of husband George at Repps was in fact my Great Great Grandmother (that a coincidence). Her maiden name was Pye and I think they were millers, she was born Potter Heigham and buried at Burgh St Margaret. Her late husband George Butler father of George (my Great Grandfather) miller Hingham, Pulham and Great Ellingham was the son of Robert Butler and Ann Durrant, and I have found the Durrants were also millers in the Aylsham area. Bodham Butler was also part of the family, but I do not know if he was brother of George or Robert.
