Hempnall postmill (early) |
Hempnall had a postmill that was certainly working in the late 1100s. |
Edward J. Kealey mentioned the mill in his 1987 book Harvesting the Air, Windmill Pioneers in Twelfth Century England. He stated that Walter Fitz Robert gave the mill to Bury St. Edmunds Abbey at some point probably between 1170 and 1198. |
Blomefield's History of Norfolk also made mention of a watermill that existed in the 1200s. REGR. ALB. MON. do BURY fo. 26 b The rent of it was settled on the celerer & sacrist of Bury, and the rent of a windmill here. |
