Langham
Great Windmill postmill |
c.1870 |
Langham had two post windmills in the 1700s that stood side by side - the Great Windmill and the Little Windmill. Both mills were shown on Faden's map of 1797 but one mill had disappeared by the time Bryant's map was published in 1826. |
The remaining mill had a brick and stone 2 storey roundhouse and at some point the common sails were uprated to 4 double shuttered patent sails that powered 2 pairs of stones, a flour mill and jumper. The inner pair of sails had 6 bays of 3 shutters and 2 bays of 2 shutters, while the outer pair had 6 bays of 3 shutters and 1 pair of 2 shutters. There was a gallery at the eaves and a 6 bladed fan was set on a tailpole with cart wheels. |
In 1841 a bake office and shop were also being run on the premises. |
